Microsoft Remote Desktop, a free application from Microsoft, allows you to use a Mac laptop or desktop to connect to and work from a Windows desktop computer that you have RDP access to in your on-campus office or lab. If you aren't sure whether you have RDP access to a certain machine, feel free to check with ECN via our Trouble Report System:
By remotely accessing an ECN-supported desktop computer and refraining from storing your Purdue files locally on your laptop or home computer, your data remains safely stored in your home directory on ECN's network servers -- which receive daily backups.
You'll want to follow these instructions on your Mac laptop and/or at-home Mac-- not on the on-campus desktop computer! Before you begin, download and install Microsoft Remote Desktop free via the App Store to your Mac.(Please note you'll need to be running 10.12.6 MacOS Sierra minimally, to run/download this application from the App Store).
1. Connect to Purdue's Virtual Private Network. When using a computer off-campus, this step is required. Establish a connection to Purdue's Virtual Private Network ( ). For a description of this service, please see ITaP's VPN \"Getting Started\" page.
Again, if you do not know your computer's IP, feel free to check with ECN via our Trouble Report System. Once you enter all of the necessary information, click the red circle in the top right corner of the dialog to close it out and save your configuration. You should now see \"Office PC\" in your list under \"My Desktops.\" Feel free to change the \"Connection name\" of your configuration to anything you like. More specific names can be helpful when you need to set up connections to multiple machines on campus.
I've not had any issues with RDC in Lion. However, since upgrading to ML, I've noticed that when I launch a session, the 'connection' box tends to stay on the screen. I haven't noticed if it happens when using a single screen, but I primarily use RDC at work with a secondary display connected. The RDC session launches on the second display and the connection box stays on my MBP screen. Sometimes it will go away after 10-15 min or so, sometimes it stays until I close that RDC session.
My company requires VMWare View to access a remote windows desktop. Under Mac OS, VMWare View calls MSFT RDC to handle the screen interface. It is RDC that is the problem, not VMWare View, according to the crash logs.
I'm not really sure what's happening here. I'm running Lion (10.7.5), and I'm seeing that, although some people say that RDC 2.1.1 doesn't work on Lion, there are those that say it works for them no problem. This is really disconcerting. I love my macbook, but my company works on Windows 7 PCs, so I have to be able to make this connection. Is it really possible that Microsoft is not going to continue supporting Lion and Mountain Lion for RDC connections That would be a very unfortunate state of affairs.

Although remote access through a local network would be most effective, since the closer you are to the device the quicker the connection, it's also possible from anywhere in the world, providing the network is secure and fast enough.
Remote Desktop Connection can be used by faculty and staff to remotely access a campus Windows computer from a Mac computer. This first requires that the campus computer be set up to allow remote connections through the firewall.
A likely cause for the adverse scenario may have to do with a firewall (be it 3rd-party or native to the operating system.) As a firewall defends your machine against malicious connections, it can simultaneously block remote interoperability as an added precaution.
Usually, the hardest aspect of fixing error code: 0x204 on Mac has to do with an issue from the PC end of the connection. Be sure to test out the variety of methods shared above, which should (hopefully) allow you to enjoy the Remote Desktop feature between your Mac and PC.
